THE MISSING 499 PRINTS – AN UPDATE

Thanks to all who actually read and paid attention to my previous blog about the Terence Macklin print. We have now largely solved the mystery.

Of the 499 we were unable to trace, one turned up on eBay, where it was bought by a Kent supporter, and one turned up in a house in Margate, where the owner was most pleased to donate it, along with several other very interesting pieces of Kent cricketana, to the Heritage Trust. Only 497 left to locate.

Kent v Lancashire 1995

We confirmed that the print was indeed made for Steve Marsh’s benefit in 1995, and was apparently co-sponsored by Whitbread, then a force in the brewing industry, who used many of the prints as giveaways to good customers and suppliers. We suspect that Whitbread was the indirect source of the Margate print, but we cannot be sure. Many of the remaining prints were stored by Steve in his attic, and we have been told that when he came to move house, he found piles of now mildewy prints lying among the roof beams. They were consigned to the skip. Which explains why the print is so hard to find these days.

So most of them have gone, as, we fear, has Terence Macklin himself. We have not been able to track him down, but as his gallery in Whitstable closed some 20 years ago and he has not produced any new work that we have been made aware of, we think that he has probably gone to the great art studio in the sky. A pity if that is so, as he created many interesting cricket pictures.

If anybody knows anything more about this print or Macklin himself, please let us know. We are keen to learn more.
